Boston Miter Gears are designed for the transmission of motion and power between two intersecting shafts positioned at a right angle. Boston Gear's precision-machined J and JS Series universal joints, commonly referred to as "pin and block" type, are designed for connecting shafts at angles up to 30° for speeds up to 2000 RPM. All 14 sizes are stocked in solid, plain, and finished bores in both steel (J) and stainless steel (JS). At Boston Gear, we manufacture our FC couplings from the highest quality alloy steel - not from powdered metal as many other industrial manufacturers do. Consisting of two metal jaws - or hubs - and an insert, this style of coupling is suited for high-torque and shock loads, does not require lubrication, and is not affected by oil, grease, dirt, or moisture.The allowable torque for the FC series of couplings is determined by the insert material. These inserts are the wearing member of the coupling and can be easily replaced with minimal effort.

The different styles offered include spur, gear rack, pinion wire, stem pinions, and internal gears, and most come with a selection of bore diameters, keyways, and setscrews to accommodate a wide variety of application requirements. They are available in plastic, non-metallic, brass, steel, and cast iron and are manufactured in a variety of styles, including plain, web, web with lightening holes, and web with spokes. Many are available with or without hubs.Boston Gear manufactures both 14 1/2° and 20° PA, involute, full-depth system gears. While 20° PA is generally recognized as having a higher load-carrying capacity, 14 1/2° PA gears are used extensively because of lower backlash and smoother, quieter operation. Boston Gear change gears are used primarily on machine tools to provide different cutting speeds while using a constant speed input. All Boston Gear change gears are manufactured with a double key to accept the compound steel bushings that connect two gears together, allowing them to spin on an intermediate shaft. The change gears we stock range from 20-tooth through 128-tooth gears, in one tooth increments, depending upon the diametrical pitch, for a nearly infinite number of ratio possibilities. Boston Gear's stock helical gears are manufactured in both right- and left-handed configurations with an industry standard 45° helix angle to transmit motion and power between non-intersecting shafts that are parallel or at 90° to each other. For parallel shaft operation, helical gears with opposite-hand helix angles are required. For shafts at 90°, a same-hand helix angles must be used.For parallel shaft applications, the overlapping tooth contact of our helical gears provides smoother, quieter operation and higher horsepower capacity than spur gears of comparable size. For 90° shaft applications, the tooth-contact area of helical gears is very small, making it ideal for applications requiring only limited load carrying capacity.
