Haas Automation Inc. is the largest machine tool builder in the Western world, specializing in the manufacturing of CNC vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, CNC lathes, and rotary products. Founded in 1983 by Gene Haas, the company began by producing the first fully programmable collet indexer, which proved highly successful. By 1987, Haas Automation started developing its first vertical machining center (VMC), the VF-1, which was introduced at a competitive price, challenging foreign-made machine tools.
