The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom, responsible for maintaining monetary and financial stability across the UK economy. Founded in 1694 and headquartered on Threadneedle Street in London, the institution maintains price stability by setting the official UK interest rate known as the Bank Rate and managing inflation toward the target set by the government. As the central monetary authority, the bank issues secure polymer banknotes for England and Wales while supervising critical payment systems such as CHAPS. Through its Prudential Regulation Authority, the Bank of England regulates major commercial banks, building societies, credit unions, and insurers. The organization manages the UK's official foreign currency reserves, conducts quantitative easing operations, and publishes financial statistics, exchange rates, and yield curves. Governed by the Court of Directors and led by the Governor, it operates statutory committees including the Monetary Policy Committee, Financial Policy Committee, and Prudential Regulation Committee. Additionally, the central bank oversees the SONIA interest rate benchmark and provides banking services to financial institutions and foreign monetary authorities.
